Artist Bio
Skylar Sekr is based Pimlico Central London, England. They are a mixed media artist and photographer, working with everything from inks, acrylics and spray paints, to plaster, resin, gold leaf and mixed recycled materials. They also create digital art that mainly focuses in abstract faces, popular late 80's to early 2000's cartoon, TV/film characters, with a twist and on occasions, and can be seen taking these digital creations and enlarging them as bold graffiti murals, around central London. They really enjoy doing street and architectural photography, to capture everyday uninterrupted moments, unposed and daily lives, capturing the true emotions and expressions.
They have been mostly self-taught or lightly guided in various mediums, ever since they could pick up a pencil and have not stopped. They enjoy creating thought provoking works in various styles, to open peoples minds to a different perspective of what art can show. They love to share their emotions in every piece and use this as a form of self expression to showcase a wide range of mediums and techniques.
Since 2016, they have sold their art work across the world to small public and private galleries, as well as presenting at local exhibitions and events based on their current place of living. They often take part in localised charity events, gifting art for fundraisers and charity auctions, as well as doing interactive art demonstrations with and for local youth groups, looking to explore their creativity in a new and fun way. Their art is often placed into competitions depending on the locality and in various mediums. Most of which are untried or new to them, so that they can learn something new in the process and develop new skills or further, deepen their knowledge of their current level, so that they can create more depth and excel, which starts to show as it filters down into their more recent works.
Artist History
Skylar has had a difficult and troubled run with life. Growing up and moved around to different locations across the south of England. At the age of 9, they were diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder and Asperges, which made their school, home and social life difficult. They lacked the key abilities to understand various social interactions and emotional aspects, that a growing child needed. This continued to trouble them, up into their early twenties, where their mind had only really matured to the level of a 16-18 year old. This prevented them in correctly choosing the best decisions and actions to take, sending them into a very long lasting depressive state, which still has lasting effects to the present day.
Determined to do better, Skylar attended different colleges and courses to gain new artistic abilities and knowledge, whilst moving around the South of the UK independently at 17-19. They gained the necessary skills and qualifications over time, to advance and get a footing, ready for a university place in one of London's art universities. Though this took a great toll on their mental health, with multiple setbacks and delays, further being re-diagnosed in their mid to late 20's, with other long term mental health difficulties, on top of their original childhood issues, it did not stop them. Despite their history, their love, focus and passion for creating art never faltered and only spurred them on to do better, explore and has driven them to want more, from a delayed start to their dream career.
They worked as a tattoo artist and body piercer on and off depending on availability, from late 2011 through to early 2020, in multiple locations. Often using themselves as a live canvas to practice this art form on for many years, before deciding to move away from it, to focus more on other ventures and goals. Skylar over the years has developed many practical skills, which was put to the test and applied, after being asked to do a charity commission, creating an 21x18ft 3D backdrop, in an indoor arched, semi aquatic environment, with functioning waterfall, for a reptile zoo late 2016, using mostly recycled materials and a very strict budget, of which was their first ever big public project. On top of that, Skylar was able to use their keen sense of creating as little waste as possible, by crafting multiple other sculptures and decorations, to use in and out of live animal enclosures, using up to 75% of the excess waste from the first initial commission, that can still be viewed present day.
Now in their early 30's, Skylar has established themselves as a notable small time artist and photographer, expanding on all their skills, and to not let their difficulties impact them in their desires and dreams to do more, using the struggles of their mental health and life, as the main creative inspiration.
